ABOUT CARLSBAD

In the year 2,000 the population of Carlsbad was listed at 78,000 people and the city covers an area of 37 square miles.

History: Carlsbad - the name - was derived from a 19th century european spa.  The history of Carlsbad's involves a variety of cultures. The Luiseno Indians inhabited the shores of Carlsbad's coastal lagoon prior to the 1769 arrival of Don Gaspar de Portola and Fr. Juan Crespi. Soldiers and priests followed and established pueblos and missions.

After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1833, the holdings of the missions were made available through grants from the Mexican government. Much of the land in the Carlsbad area became the property of Irish born, Robert Kelly, who eventually left the land to his family and descendants.

After World War II, the area increased in population as veterans from Pendleton Marine base returned to the area.
